April 2019 Meeting Notes

We started off the April meeting with Tolling the Boats lost in April, followed by birthday wishes for our members. We followed that with the nomination, vote, and swearing in of Steve S. as our new Base Secretary.

Old and New Business
Kaps for Kids – Kerry R. couldn’t make I to the April meeting and since he is so involved with the decision and planning, we tabled the issue until the next meeting that he can attend.

Smokey Point – Once again, Seattle Base members will be manning the coffee booth at the Smokey Point rest stop. This year we will be at the south-bound Smokey Point rest stop on July 12 – 15. We will have sign-up sheets at the upcoming meetings. We hope you’ll sign-up to help out with this important fund-raising event.

Base Float Refit - We are looking at putting together a working party to get the base float into shape before our upcoming events and parades. The float needs cleaning, repainting, and some electrical work. We are looking for volunteers to help. Please contact Base Commander Ric for more information.

April Program
This month’s program was a presentation by Steve S. on the 75th birthday party for the submarine Razorback.

The event was put on the by the City of North Little Rock and Steve had photos from the event and has promised to share some videos. He talked about the all the people that made it to the festivities, including the son of an airman that was rescued by Razorback during World War II. Steve also gave us a recap of the tours the group went on while in Little Rock. Steve also pointed out how none of it would have been possible without Bob O.’s help to get the submarine returned from Turkey. Bob was at the meeting and shared some of his thoughts on the event.

Good of the Order
Base Jr. Vice Commander Earl G. thanked us for the cards and visits during his recovery from triple-bypass surgery.

Base Commander Ric H. let us know he is working with NAVSOURCE to scan and preserve images from the memorabilia book of a plankowner of USS Picuda (SS382). NAVSOURCE had been contacted by a relative of the submariner and put them in touch with Ric. Ric will share some of the images as they are scanned.

VFW Post 2995
In addition to normal Base business, we will be discussing Seattle Base's participation in the Kaps for Kids program. This issue was tabled at our last meeting so that everyone had time to think about this. Please be ready to discuss and vote on the issue.

The program will be Base Commander's choice, so be sure to come by and see what Ric comes up with.

We hope to see you at the meeting.
