Memorial Day 2021

As restrictions on gatherings are being lifted and we remember our fallen shipmates on Memorial Day, we wanted to pass along some information about ceremonies in the Seattle area.

Summertime Base Picnic – We still hope to have a picnic in July. As of this moment it may not be at the VFW because of the hours they are open on weekends. We are still working on it but if someone comes up with another place please contact one of the officers and we will check it out.

Binnacle List:
We were informed that Karl Krompholz’s (from base commander and current point of contact) son was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Please keep Karl’s family in your thoughts and prayers.

Cabela's Report and Memorial Day Events

We got a lot of attention and donations, got to practice a lot of our sea stories and blow the klaxon lots of times. We explained our organization purpose to a great many visitors and we also surfaced close to a dozen submariners in the area that didn't yet know USSVI even existed.

Here are a few pictures from the event. (Thanks to Ric Hedman and John Mansfield for sending the photos).

Memorial Day 2011 Recap

We had a nice day and heard a good program at Tahoma National Cemetery on Memorial Day. Turnout for the program was good and base member Robbie Robertson was honored with a plaque for all the work he has done for the cemetery, including his most recent work on getting the carillon tower installed. After the program, we gathered at the USSVI plaque for our annual photo.
It was a little sad to note the missing and damaged plaques from last Thanksgiving (click here for more about the original incident), but there is some good news on that too. The Tahoma National Cemetery Support Group, through the generosity of private citizens and local businesses, has been able to obtain enough donations to replace all the missing and damaged plaques. A local monument company is fabricating the new plaques and they are expected to be installed by the end of summer.

Things at the Cruzin to Colby car show went pretty well. Base Treasurer Jim Harper reported that the base raised $100.74 at the event.

Finally, I wanted to share the Memorial Day message from the USSVI National Commander, T. Michael Bircumshaw.

Shipmates,

Memorial Day is the most significant day of each year that touches the deepest part of our reasons for being Sub Vets. Our purpose is headlined with the words; “To perpetuate the memory of our Shipmates.”

The vast majority of those who remain on “Eternal Patrol” were lost to many of us during our lifetime. For example, my shipmate, Bud Atkins TMCM SS of the Groton Base, and I were born in the 1930s and since then 57 of our 65 honored submarines and the 3,500 valiant shipmates that rode them down from the Squalus to the Scorpion are a part of our living history. I daresay that either Bud or myself personally knew someone aboard the Stickleback, Thresher, and Scorpion, as do many of you reading this today.

Why have I chosen to make this message so very personal? Because it is about you and me. On this day I relive my feelings for one exceptionally close friend, Laird Heiser MM1 SS, serving aboard the USS Thresher (SSN-593) on that fateful April day in ‘63 and I try to imagine his loss to me and his family times the 4,000 Shipmate Submariners that we choose to never forget. I find it to be a staggering number of shipmates, souls and loved ones and I know that there are brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, sons and daughters and lots of grandkids, shipmates and girlfriends, who also hold memories of their Submariner in that vacant place in their heart destined to never heal.

I urge you to take this day to a new level in joy by reaching out to your living Shipmates and loved ones as you pay tribute in sad remembrance for those who have made the supreme sacrifice.

Don’t make the mistake of not having taken every opportunity to make your true feelings clear to those you care about. There is no escape for any of us, nor knowledge of when it will occur, from that eventual “Eternal Patrol”.

Fraternally,
Michael

Memorial Day

The weather only halfway cooperated for the Memorial Day observance at Tahoma National Cemetery. It rained steadily during most of the day, but finally let up about two-thirds the way through the service and held off long enough for us to get a picture by the USSVI plaque at the cemetery.

I also wanted to share the Memorial Day Message from USSVI National Commander Pat Householder.

Remembering on Memorial Day...

Arlington National Cemetery is the centerpiece of our national cemetery system, but it is only one of 141 others around the country and 24 more located in other countries.

Over three million men and women are interred in these hallowed grounds; Across the years, those who fought and died for our freedoms as well as those who served and survived to help build a better America lie here and give silent testimony to the faithfulness of their service.

And there are the others, who disappeared from the battlefield without trace, or were swallowed up by the unforgiving seas.
In particular, we remember the brave young men who went to war in Submarines and laid their lives on the altar of freedom in steel hulls now forever on eternal patrol.

All of these brave young souls deserve to be honored and remembered for their sacrifices; over 1.5 million of them in battle and another 1.5 million as veterans, all of whom left the comforts of home to endure hardship and danger to insure our freedoms.

Those who did not serve will never know the feeling of pride that comes from having honorably served our Nation to preserve the greatest constitutional republic that has ever existed.

We veterans can take solemn pride in knowing that we 'earned' our citizenship. We understand the meaning of sacrifice for a cause larger than our own personal lives.
On this Memorial Day week-end, remember to give thanks to each other, to all those brave young men and women currently serving, and pay homage to the men and women who are now silent sentinels in hallowed ground throughout the world.

No nation has ever been better served than by the men of the United States Submarine Service and the warriors of the United States military services.

I am proud to be your shipmate and I salute you for your selfless service to the United States of America.

Fraternally,
Patrick Householder
National Commander 2008-2010

Memorial Day Events

At our May meeting we discussed some of the events going on around the Puget Sound area for Memorial Day. Since it is right around the corner, I wanted to share some of the information.

Doug Abramson, Jim Harper, and Bill Giese are going to have a USSVI table at the Cruzin to Colby car show in Everett on May 30 and 31.

On Memorial Day, several members are planning on attending the ceremony at Tahoma National Cemetery. Everyone should note that the Tahoma ceremony will start at 1:00PM instead of the usual 11:00 AM time. You should still plan on being there early to find parking.

Finally, South Sound Base has borrowed our float and they are planning on doing some fund-raising at the Wal-Mart in South Hill and possibly Spanaway over the weekend. If you’re in the south end, stop by and say hi.
