The Submariners film from Naval History and Heritage Command

Those of you that frequent YouTube probably already know about the Naval History and Heritage Command channel. But for those of you who don't, you might want to head over and have a look at some of the videos they have posted. The channel has videos covering all aspects of US Navy and Marine Corps history, from the early sail days up through Operation Desert Storm, and the Naval History and Heritage Command usually uploads new ones every few weeks.

To keep this entry submarine related, below I've embedded the three parts of the 1967 documentary "The Submariners", which follows the crew of the nuclear attack submarine USS Shark (SSN-591) on a training mission. I'm sure a few of you will notice some errors and inconsistencies in the film, but overall it is a pretty good film. I hope you enjoy it and don't forget you can click on the Full Screen button to view the video on the full screen.

Part 1 introduces crew members at home before deployment, and shows the departure of the Shark from port. The direct link to the video is: Part 1 The Submariners.

Part 2 explains how sonar works, gives a brief history of Navy submarines, and shows a target tracking drill and preparations to fire a torpedo. The direct link to the video is: Part 2 The Submariners

Part 3 concludes the training exercise, as the submarine patiently hunts an elusive target. The direct link to the video is: Part 3 The Submariners.
